In 2006-2007 the Albuquerque Journal had a story which indicated that the FBI looked upon Luna County, New Mexico as one of the most corrupt counties of three major counties they have been continually investigating. The problem is that Luna County officials have been too smart for them, it would seem!
What started out as a fight against the corrupt Luna County, NM Ordinance #37 has turned into an all-out fight against corruption through out the County which include the various Cities and Villages in this county.
There are many reasons for the problems of corruption in Luna County, New Mexico. Some of those problems include how much old-time farmers still hold to an "old west" attitude of justice while erroneously calling themselves "Christian" as they violate the freedoms and rights of the poor and others who are not farmers!
There are Indian and Mexican families whose roots go back before the white man appeared in the area and as a result there exists a degree of an ethnic "old-timers" "rub".
Then, there is the more causative factors which involves the closeness of the Mexican Border with the county and the drug cartels who fight for territory and drug deals. This sometimes involve law enforcement action. But the problem is that some who are in law enforcement, due to the politics and old-timer's "old west" attitudes coupled with the "Farmers" - - - a selling out may occur through which "survival" is the basic modus operandi.
It has been said that there was a true Law Enforcement Officer who attempted to rid the Village of Columbus from its corrupt ways by ridding the area of drug dealers, smugglers and illegal immigrants. But the antics of "old-timers" known and called the "Good Ole Boys" who are the farmers who stir the caldron of deprivation against Veterans on Low Income, the less fortunate, the poor and those living on SSI or on their pensions; and those with political pull which has caused for serious problems that the population of the Village would not accept because it was hurting their community's efforts to exist under their terms (mostly Mexican) who want U.S. recognition but not necessarily abide by U.S.A. laws (if they can get away with it). "We'll take their money and use for our needs here," it was overheard, "but we don't need to live by their standards" and, "We are a law unto ourselves" is another remark, and so they have proven themselves to be true to their continued corruption, it would seem to appear.
What has been presented in the Deming Headlight about the Village of Columbus is icing and not the cake which has a very bitter taste in spirit andtruth! They want your money, come shop at the Village of Columbus, but don't stay very ---> |
long because you are really not wanted if you are an "Anglo" white from the north!
Only a few want to live and abide by true U.S. standards and conduct themselves accordingly. The difference here is between the word "Want" and "Willing"... for some want to... but the others have not choice and are willing to.
They do not want "English" but "Spanish" - - They do not want U.S. laws but their own which existed south of the border! And, the few who do want to bring the Village out of the old Mexican "stone age" are patronized and provided a degree of "lip service" to quell the truth from being exposed which involves all that has already been said above and below!
It has been said about Clare May, that being a citizen of the U.S. or making the area safe from the drug cartels for the needs of a safe environment; but the need to overcome the falling further into destitute situations that caused for the population to rid itself of this serious law abiding fighter for justice and safety for the community. That was indeed Clare May!
That was Clare May who was the officer who fought so hard to clean up the Village of Columbus from Corruption. But the Village of Columbus didn't want to be cleaned up. They wanted to continue business "AS IS" - the same kind of corruption that has infected the whole County of Luna. This is pretty much the same for the whole of Luna County whose Real Estate companies, Farmers and what may be considered as "big business" for the County Seat (Deming, NM) that control the Commissioners.... BIG BUCKS and to hell with the small guy, the Veteran, the Poor, the Elderly too...
When Clare May ran for the position of Luna County Sheriff, by all accounts he should have won the election. But again, it has been alleged that corruption has no boundaries and even electronic manipulation may have occurred to get someone else elected who should not even be wearing a gun!
There are other prime examples of corruption in Luna County, New Mexico. But this is not the time to go into all that they encompass at this time.
There is another group illegally using the same name as this one (Luna County Freedom). The corrupt "Luna County Freedom" joined with various corrupt politicians which brought about Ordinance #37 but now they attempt to make it appear to the public that they are against it when, in fact, they are a part of the cause for its enactment.
Luna County is an example of the same attitude, corruption and idea unless you have wealth!
